In Siena, the birth, as an association, of Sienese entrepreneurs occurred during the 12th century, as an autonomous body from the Commune of Siena, with its headquarters located in another palace. In the lively atmosphere of the Mercanzia markets, commerce and culture intertwined, creating a vibrant moment of medieval life in which every purchase was a promise of adventure and discovery.In the Middle Ages, the 'Mercanzia' was the guild that brought together producers and sellers of goods at fairs. Like the other guilds, it had its own consuls and rectors who participated in the government of the city and supervised trade-related activities.
In the heart of Switzerland, Merkanzia was born with a bold vision: to revive the art of haberdashery. The selected products reflect the authenticity of Tuscan cuisine and can be found in the region's small shops and markets, as well as in the best restaurants. Our partner producers are bound to the traditions of craftsmanship and do not prioritise productivity at the expense of quality.
We make sure that the recipes and processing of the selected products correspond to those handed down by Tuscan tradition, and that they are mainly obtained using local products, from wheat to meat, from sheep's milk to olives, etc.

Guido, the Tuscan in Zürich
An Italian entrepreneur from Siena, with origins in Monte Amiata, he has lived in Switzerland for 15 years. Despite the distance, his passion for Tuscan cuisine and food still burns strong. With a genuine desire to share his heritage, Guido has always wanted to bring the rich flavours and traditions of Tuscany to Swiss tables.
Davide: from fashion to food quality
Davide, originally from the Sienese countryside (Crete Senesi), is a fashion entrepreneur with a penchant for style and quality. A great lover of the table, he is now taking on a new role, leading the selection of local food suppliers for Merkanzia in Switzerland. With his keen eye for quality and years of business experience, Davide ensures that only the best of Tuscany reaches our customers' tables..

As well as an online food shop, you can meet Merkanzia at markets and street food festivals in the Canton of Zurich.
We are also available for catering services with authentic Tuscan dishes and products serving German-speaking Switzerland. Our team brings Tuscan street food to events such as company meetings and private parties, or our delicious offerings directly to your workplace with our food truck.
